The key to productivity or an open barn door? AI agents and data security

Imagine having a digital assistant that not only reads your emails, but also coordinates appointments in the CRM system, responds to customer enquiries on Slack and generates complex reports from sensitive databases.

What sounded like science fiction just a short while ago is now becoming a reality thanks to modern AI agents. But as the power of these agents grows, so does a critical question: just how secure is our most sensitive corporate data really, if an AI is given the ‘master key’?

The new era: when AI doesn’t just talk, but acts


Unlike simple chatbots, AI agents operate autonomously. However, to be truly useful, they require access to application programming interfaces (APIs) for email inboxes, CRM systems such as Salesforce, or internal chat tools. This takes us out of the protected space of an isolated AI application and into a complex ecosystem of permissions and potential points of entry.

The three most dangerous security risks


Anyone who integrates AI agents deeply into their communication processes must face three new threat scenarios:

  1. Indirect Prompt Injection: The Trojan in the inbox
    This is perhaps the most insidious risk. An attacker sends an email to an employee. The content is harmless to humans but contains hidden commands for the AI agent scanning the email. The aim: to trick the agent into extracting passwords or forwarding confidential attachments to an external address.
  2. The ‘master key’ problem (over-privileging) AI agents
    are often granted blanket administrative rights during setup to ensure ‘smooth operations’. However, if such an agent is compromised by a malfunction or an attack, the attacker gains immediate access to the entire customer database or email archive.
  3. Data leakage through training
    Anyone using standard consumer AI runs the risk of sensitive company data (such as internal strategy documents or customer information) finding its way into the model providers’ training data. A nightmare for GDPR compliance.

The solution: trust is good, architecture is better


Security in the age of AI agents does not mean doing without the technology, but equipping it with the right protective mechanisms (‘guardrails’).

Strategy 1: PII scrubbing & data anonymisation
Before data is sent to a language model, it should pass through an automated filtering instance. Names, IBANs or telephone numbers are replaced by placeholders (e.g. [CUSTOMER_1]). The AI processes the logical context, and only when the output is returned to the user are the real data reinserted locally.

Strategy 2: Human-in-the-Loop (HITL)
An AI agent should be allowed to analyse and draft – but for critical actions (such as deleting data or sending emails to external parties), the proverbial ‘four-eyes principle’ is always required. The human remains the final approval authority.

Strategy 3: Enterprise Infrastructure & Local Models
Companies should rely on enterprise cloud solutions that contractually guarantee that data is not stored or used for training (zero data retention). For maximum security, running open-source models on their own servers (on-premise) is recommended, ensuring that no data leaves the company network.

AI agents will fundamentally change the way we communicate. However, productivity gains must not come at the expense of data security. Those who invest today in a robust security architecture – with clear authorisation concepts, anonymisation tools and human oversight – will build the trust needed to realise the full potential of AI agents.
